I offered to install power cables myself, but they informed me that this would void my warranty. I even supplied images of the system, but that wouldn't convince them. My 76th birthday is April 1st.įor clarification on my weeks-long battle with X86 phone help, Lenovo shipped me a machine with SATA drive bay data cable provisioning, but no power cables.ġ) I understood the difference between SATA power and SATE data cablesĢ) That their machine was delivered without power cables. Even if you could actually purchase a top end X86 world GPU, it would probably cost much the same.Īpple's predicted arrival date is April 1st to April 8th.

Jane pointed me to free specialized Apple online training courseware for Windows users new to Mac.īased on my three-year experience with an iPad and yesterday's helpline experience, this previously dedicated X86 user has one word that describes to me, at least, Apple's business SkierEvans: The idea that the Mac Studio is simply a top end GPU with a free, powerful computer attached has occured to me, too. My problem solved, both Linda in northern Utah, and Jane from somewhere in the deep south engaged me in friendly chat about small town life, Canadian winter and working from home. With the Apple helpline, I felt understood, I was helped and, best of all, I felt welcomed. With the X86 world, I've felt like I was mostly ignored and barely tolerated. Compared to my Apple experience, it was like comparing CB radio to Zoom.

In the X86 world, I spent endless hours on hold listening to horrid music, usually resulting in failed, frustrating communications with tech-illiterate people speaking rapidly with strong foreign accents over poor connections. With the Apple team, I experienced no-wait-time response from helpful, friendly people who solved my problem respectfully, quickly and professionally. But the lost time and psychic cost for me was high. Eventually they realized that I was right and they were wrong and they glumly refunded the entire purchase price. They argued with me for weeks about whose fault it was that I couldn't add additional HDDs to their $3.5K box. Compared to some recent excruciating helpline experiences with the X86 world, I can hardly believe the difference.įor the same purchase price as my new Studio, last summer the X86 world couldn't even supply a working system. Solving a payment glitch for my new Studio, yesterday morning I interacted for the first time with Apple phone help. For example, I've never seen the phrase "teraflops" mentioned in a personal computer spec before. Everything I've learned so far about my incoming Apple Studio is exciting and confidence building. I’m a decades-long exclusively Windows user, and I recently decided to try a Mac. Rick.lang wrote:To paraphrase Bob Dylan: “She knows what you need, but Apple knows what you want.”

My Mac Pro has 8 TB internal storage and will meet my needs for years to come (as long as Resolve supports the Intel architecture) using the large internal storage with external RAID as appropriate. I’m still using my crippled iMac late 2009 with 1 TB storage so I prefer to max out internal storage.

If you like to upgrade equipment every two or three years, buy less now. If you like to get several years usage out of your equipment, go with a fatter machine. Future designs may behave differently but you only get one shot at configuring the Mac Studio so getting more than you expect to need today may be prudent to manage future situations. There’s no guarantee tomorrow will be the same as today. 64GB GPU cores apparently might be useful for Fusion, but not needed with the current Resolve architecture, but I’d lean towards the Mac Ultra anyway. If you’ve thought about buying the Studio Max, $200 to me is a no-brainer upgrade to increase potential performance. Resolve utilizes the base cores generally before adding the multi-threaded cores so it’s fine running with base only if you’re not putting a heavy demand on it.

Not every function uses all cores based on my Mac Pro’s behaviour with 16 cores (32 multi-threaded cores). Resolve does a very good job utilizing whatever cores you throw at it.
